How to Wash Polyester Filled Bolster?
You may have an allergy and bought hypoallergenic bed sheets such as TENCEL™ (also known as lyocell) for your bed. For bed accessories like your pillows and bolster, you might have chosen to go with microfiber or polyester. Microfiber is made from polyester except polyester is a category of polymers while microfiber is a synthetic fibre finer than one denier or decitex/thread. Microfiber is therefore finer and more breathable than polyester. However, both are easy to care for and require just one to two washes in a year. So, how do you wash a polyester or microfiber filled bolster?
Before the Wash
The recommendations for washing polyester filled bolster is simple and straightforward. All you need is a high-efficient laundry detergent. Get your washing machine ready by preparing cold to warm water, set it to a gentle cycle. Before throwing your bolster into the washer, check it for rips and tears and mend them first. Otherwise, the synthetic content will fill your washer with fluff, giving you a headache to clear them after and seriously damaging your bolster.
Also, remove specific stains on your bolster first. Treat the stain with a stain remover or use heavy-duty laundry detergent such as Tide or Persil which contain enough enzymes to remove the stains. Add some detergent into a bowl of warm water and stir up the content with your towel until you see bubbles. Rinse the towel, now soaked with the detergent and water and apply it to the stained area of the bolster to remove the unwanted spot. Or you can use a soft brush to dip into the detergent water and slowly work on the stain for fifteen minutes before washing the entire bolster.
Washing and Drying the Bolster
Add one to two spoons of detergent into the washing machine and choose a cold or warm water setting and select the gentle cycle. Add the bolster into your machine with a couple of towels to help balance the load. When the wash cycle is complete, add an extra rinse cycle to make sure that all the detergent is properly washed away.
Before you put the bolster into your dryer, fluff the filling. Add some clean tennis balls into the dryer with your bolster to break down clumps. The dry should then be turned to low to medium heat. It will take a longer than normal time to get the bolster completely dry. You may want to remove the bolster from the dryer now and then to re-fluff it by hand to keep it in shape.
Quick Spot Clean for Fresh Bolsters
Since it isn’t necessary to wash your bolster regularly, you might want to add a bolster protector, which can be washed frequently. Or you might want to add Febreeze to your bolster every mow and then. You can also sprinkle baking soda on your bolster and let it sit for an hour before vacuuming the baking soda away. Baking soda will absorb odours while the vacuum can remove any dust mites or pet hair.
You can also check your bolster for stains and just remove the stains regularly to keep your bolster clean and fresh.
